Ice Raiders Roll Over Stampede 9-2
The Reno Ice Raiders played their second preseason exhibition game against the Stockton Stampede last Saturday with nearly the same results as the first. With more, even rowdier fans in attendance, the Ice Raiders handled Stockton 9-2.
Ice Raiders’ forward Mickey Lang continued his impressive play, netting a hat trick and three assists. Lang’s elite speed and elusive puck-handling skills frustrated the Stockton defenders all night.
Nicholas Anderson chipped in two goals for the Ice Raiders and assisted on two of Lang’s goals. Chris Whitten, Zeph Fagergren, Sam Somers, and Cory Jooster also found the back of the net for Reno.
Ice Raiders’ goaltender Michael O’Malley was strong in net, keeping Stockton off the scoreboard until late in the second period.
Stockton took 20 minutes worth of penalties in the first period and Reno capitalized on the opportunities. Reno jumped out to a 5-0 in the lead in the opening frame on two power play and three even-strength goals.
Reno made it 6-0 before Stockton finally broke through on a power play in the second period. The Ice Raiders responded quickly and pulled away for the 9-2 final.
Reno Ice added more bleacher seating in all four corners of the rink, creating a thunderous atmosphere.
“After the overwhelming response from the first game we worked with Reno Ice to find more room for fans,” said Ice Raiders’ General Manager Jess Peterson. “The more fans that come to these games, the closer we get to building that much-needed second sheet of ice for the rink. Plus the players love the energy these fans bring.”
Assistant Captain Simon Lebleu was asked his opinion of the game. “The game was fun but rough, we’d like to see a little more hockey from future opponents. These are merely exhibition games to get the team situated and work out kinks for game day ops. Our regular season games should bring a much better show.”
